FABA Forge a Viking Era Utility Knife
Make your first knife with Florida Artist Blacksmith Association (FABA)
Service Description
This 6-to-7-hour Saturday class taught at John Butler's Family Farm in Pace, FL is a fund raiser for FABA. The event includes lunch from Sonny's BBQ. Class is an introduction to knife forging using a solid fuel forge. SAFETY first! Wear natural fiber long trousers and solid shoes. No synthetic fabrics: blue jeans and leather boots work best. Long sleeve natural fiber (i.e. cotton) shirt is recommended. Eye protection - safety glasses - will be provided and must be worn at all times when working. Ear protection will be available. We will start with a 1"x1/4" flat bar and draw out material to make the handle. We will then twist the handle to give it better grip and turn a "pig's tail" to act as a finger guard. Finally, we will forge and file the blade. Learn the basics of blacksmithing, good hammer control reduces the need for filing or grinding.
